May 31st, 2008 : “A Night at the Races"

Supporters of the Providence Volunteer Fire Company had a fun-filled evening at Calvert Hall College trying to “guess” at the winners of various horse races. No fun evening would be complete without plenty of food and beverage, and this night was no exception. Attendees were treated to a very pleasant time laughing, cheering for their picks in each of the races, and trying their hands at the spinning wheel of chance.

Our thanks to all of the members who worked hard to make the evening a success. And, a special thank you to Calvert Hall for the use of the wonderful facility, and to all those who sponsored horses and races and made other financial contributions that once again showed their support for our 100% volunteer organization.

Of course, protecting our community always comes first.  The Rosedale Volunteer Fire Company was kind enough to send an engine and crew to our station for the evening so that all of our members could attend without compromising the safety of our community. This continues our long-standing tradition of helping out each other by providing coverage during special events.

Thanks to everybody who made the “Night at the Races” a success.  We hope to see even more people the next time we hold this event.  What a great evening!

May 30, 2008 : Fire Box 1-32

For the third time in recent months the units from Providence and other area fire companies were alerted to respond to Virginia Towers high-rise in Towson. This time the fire started in the trash room area of the building, but the smoke that spread throughout the various floors of the building created the major problem. Many of the elderly residents had already been through two other recent fires at their building and were quite concerned.

The crews from Providence assisted in ventilation and in helping some of the residents. A few of the occupants needed medical attention, but there were no serious injuries, and the fire was quickly brought under control. The units responding were Engine 291, Truck 297, and Floodlight 293 from Providence as well as E-101, E-302 (Lutherville VFC), E-11, E-10, T-1, T-8, BC-11 and several medic units. The units from Providence were at the scene a little over an hour.

April 18th, 2008 : Woods Fire Box Area 38-3

Units from Providence Volunteer Fire Company were alerted for a woods fire in box area 29-7 at the intersection of Loch Raven Drive and the Reservoir. Truck 297, Brush 294, and Engine 291 responded. Upon arriving at the scene, the location was updated to Morgan Mill and Manor Rd. in an area know as the cliffs. Brush 294 was the fist unit to access the area utilizing the four wheel drive capabilities and the fire trails. Upon arrival, Brush 294 found several acres of heavy fire conditions with both brush and trees involved. Brush 294 requested 2 additional brush units, a tanker strike team, and Kingsville Volunteers all terrain vehicle. The inital attack was hampered by the location of the fire, the dry conditions, and high winds. The fire continued to grow in size to approximately six acres and went to a total of 4 alarms worth of equipment. By the end of the call, Providence Volunteer Fire Company had responded to the call with Engine 291, Engine 292, Floodlight 293, Brush 294, Truck 297, and Utility 298, and a total of 18 firefighters. The last unit cleared the call at 23:06.
