Hydrant Project 6/5/10

June 14, 2010 - On Saturday June 5, 2010 a significant measure in public safety was accomplished. Patrick Curtis, brother of Providence member Brian Curtis coordinated the inspection and maintenance of 132 fire hydrants in commuinities of Providence, Hampton, Chatterleigh, Hunt Crest, Valewood, The Beechs. Patrick was the coordinator of this project in an effort to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. 22 Scouts from Parkville Troop # 26 along with 5 members from Providence completed the task in 4.5 hours (about 111 man hours ). Crews from the Towson and Hillendale fire stations completed inspections of about 35 hydrants, prior to June 5, on some of the "main" roads so that the Scouts would not be in danger of being in traffic. The inspection and maintenance of each hydrant included the following steps:

*ensuring the hydrant's locations was marked on fire department maps

*clearing any grass/debris from around each hydrant

*making sure water flowed from the hydrant and drained properly,

*lubricating the caps and threads

*giving the hydrant a fresh coat of orange paint

5 hydrants were found to be defective in some way. These hydrants are noted to be out of service and will not be used for water supply during a fire. The informtion will be forwarded to the Baltimore City Water Department for repair.

Many restraint patrons enjoyed looking at the fire engine and wearing the fireman's coat and helmet!
