Commendation and Award Presented to Civilian Daniel Driscoll
At the monthly Member’s Meeting,
the Officers and Members of the Providence Volunteer Fire Company presented a commendation and award to a civilian for saving the life of his mother.
Wednesday February 7, 2018 was a ‘ normal’ night in the Driscoll household. That was until the adult in the home suffered a medical emergency. With little delay, 9 Y/O Daniel knew exactly what to do. He found his Mom’s cellular phone and called 9-1-1. He was able to give his full and complete address to the call taker, and answer all of the questions the call taker had to identify the problem and get help on the way. Upon the arrival of members from THIS company, they were met by Daniel in the driveway ( the house sits down the hill away from the road). Daniel was able to provide the first responders with a detailed description of what happened to his mother and what had taken place prior to him calling 9-1-1.
While our members attended to his mother, Daniel stayed very strong and attentive to his 3 Y/O brother who was also in the home. Daniel remained calm as to not upset his younger brother.
With his mother being attended to, Daniel attempted to contact his father and inform him of what had happened. However, the cellular telephone was locked and he couldn’t call anyone from it. However, he was able to provide the firefighters with the full information of his father’s employment so they could try and make contact. Daniel was undeterred. He got the family iPAD and used that to FaceTime his grandparents and inform them of the emergency and that they were needed to take care of them while his mother was taken to the hospital.
While awaiting the arrival of his grandmother, He ensured that the youngster had his shoes on, gathered some toys and continued to keep him calm.
Daniel is third grade student at Hampton Elementary School. He loves LEGOs, trucks and Archery. He is in his first year as a Cub Scouts
Daniel has visited our station on a few occasions. He has attended a birth party here with “Fireman Chuck “ and “Fireman Daniel”. Being in 3rd grade, he has been at Our fire safety assembly at his school at least 3 times. Hampton Elementary School PTA arranged this assembly for a number years! That has made it so that Daniel is pretty comfortable around (US) firefighters. More importantly it shows that the Fire Safety Presentations we conduct at schools and at the station are well received !!
Daniel was presented with a plaque by “Firefighter Chuck, a gift Basket from MISSION BBQ, and a Distinguished Civilian Award from Captain Denning which reads,
PROVIDENCE VOLUNTEER FIRE CO.
